Westbourne Park design development

Design work is progressing for our new project in Westbourne Park. We have been exploring two options for the ground floor to rationalise the disconnected, different aged extensions, both materially and geometrically - The Wedged Pantry and The Wedge-shaped Island.

The Wedged Pantry option ‘straightens out’ the kitchen so it aligns with the original geometry of the house, and uses the angled residual space behind as a pantry. The new kitchen layout creates a more efficient kitchen work triangle and brings the work zone closer to the open plan dining-lounge area allowing for more interaction and connection.

The Wedge Shaped Island option solves the issue of the large gap between the existing worktops by creating a large feature island in the space. Being wedge shaped, it mediates between the two geometries of the house - the existing, and the wedge shaped 1950’s extension.

A language of new, timber joinery pieces with different functions throughout all ground floor areas will serve to connect the spaces, improve visual cohesiveness and define zones in this open plan space. Open timber shelves will sit beside chimney breasts to house books and define a seating area, while shallower shelves and closed cupboards contain dishes and silverwear defining the dining area in this open plan space. In the conservatory, cleverly designed banquette seating with storage below will hide yoga mats and will create a place to sit for a morning coffee while enjoying views of the pretty shade garden.
