In Progress: Belgravia Mews

We have recently been appointed to develop complete retrofit proposals for this mews property which is situated between the Belgravia Conservation area and the Royal Parks Conservation area in the City of Westminster. Our proposals will include upgrades to the thermal envelope, new roof insulation, new double glazed windows and north facing rooflights, new lighting and new mechanical services which be fully electric so the property can be run completely off the gas grid.

Heritage research revealed that this building was already retrofitted once, back in 1944 when the Grosvenor Estate was upgrading the dilapidated mews and stable block properties in this area.  Victorian timber windows on the street front were replaced with modern steel frame windows with a horizontal emphasis in the then popular International Style, while rear facing windows were re-used.  A new concrete frame and a terrazzo staircase with metal railings and modern detailing were inserted to replace what would have been timber.

We have been busy developing material palettes which will tie into the building’s interesting past while adding another related page to its history.
